there is... palpable disappointment. the kind that's visible through a heavy exhale and the deflating of shoulders. ever present optimism strains to keep his spine from bending ever so slightly.

the room is impressive for what it stands for. automated gym challenges? that was... a spectacle in of itself. but greyson was a man who liked to look his opponent in the face and shake their hand.

impressive or not, this felt too impersonal.
[break][break]
he released his pokemon as his 'opponent' did. a thwackey and monferno taking the field. to no one in particular, he spoke.

"i'll start us off, then." a pause. "kel! use-!" he's interrupted as the fire-type beside him races forward.
[break][break]
greyson watches with a small trace of horror as the monferno surges past and leaps, a MACH PUNCH prepped at the aegislash.
[break][break]
worse, not to be outdone, the thwackey follows in suit, removing the stick from his head, he summons an ethereal log, bringing the WOOD HAMMER down on the golurk.
[break][break]
"stop! you're leaving yourselves open!" greyson yells in anger, and worry.
[break][break]
but it was too late.
[break]

notes + MACH PUNCH at aegislash | WOOD HAMMER at golurk. they refuse to listen, apparently.

a voice echoes from above and greyson's head jerks up, only to relish in the disappointment of seeing no one. was this more of the gyms automated processes? it lingers in his mind for a moment, before it leaves as fast as a fleeting breeze.

the concern about the expansion of capitalism could wait— he had other worries.
[break][break]
"slow down!"
[break][break]
he yells, voice echoing around the plain room. greyson takes an involuntary step forward, but brings it back quickly. last thing he needed was to put himself between four warring pokemon.

the pair find their attacks are nullified by the megazord-like combination defense of the golurk and aegislash's KING SHIELD. the clang of vibrating metal precedes the grunt of a shield bash, as the two are pushed back by the much heavier, and much more powerful golurk.

"defend!"
[break][break]
the two pokemon responded in their own separate ideas of the word. where golurk and aegislash were operating as one entity, both thwackey and monferno were anything but; like two conflicting spices thrust into the same dish. it could work, but rarely did so.

penn raises his wooden stick as he attempts to block the swing with a BRANCH POKE, while kel did the arguably smarter thing— duck and roll. perhaps if he had been willing to also assist penn, the thwackey would've had better luck.
[break][break]
but, he didn't help. and thwackey certainly didn't have better luck.
[break][break]
the SACRED SWORD clashed with the empowered wooden stick and shattered it in his hands, tossing the grass-type back. that just left the monferno to hold the line until he could recover.

if he recovered.

notes + monferno DODGES, but remains nearby. thwackey attempts to BRANCH POKE the oncoming attack, but has his attack shattered and he's knocked back!

in the looming titan's shadow, kel sees the true depths of his fear. he looks back to find the thwackey still recovering from his wounds, and the cold realization — he was alone.

it closes the distance between the two of them in a flash, due to it's HIGH HORSEPOWER, and it's devastating swing of the SACRED SWORD is a reapers scythe.
[break][break]
kel does the only thing he can.
[break][break]

run.
[break][break]

frantic and afraid, he races towards penn's stirring body. the force of the SACRED SWORD catches him on the back and he's sent tumbling even faster towards his destination. the two monkeys collide, their collective, pained groans echoing in the stale air.

"get up!"
[break][break]

words of encouragement fall on deaf ears and he's forced to watch the two barely lift one another up off the ground.

"you need to work together!"
[break][break]

their chests fall in unison heavily. the thwackey raises a hand as ghostly RAZOR LEAVES race towards their opponents. it was a desperate play for a desperate pokemon.

how were they going to come back?

notes + monferno attempts to DODGE, but takes the SACRED SWORD to his retreating back. the two help each other up and thwackey throws a desperate RAZOR LEAF in their direction!

bladed leaves do little to impede their advance. like forces of nature, they cut the distance between themselves and greyson's pokemon in moments. the thunderous stomp of the golurk shakes the very earth beneath their feet, the epicenter of the EARTHQUAKE pulsing outwards, encapsulating the monkeys in it's wave. they stumble, and fall to their knees as the earth erupts beneath them.

the monferno is just barely able to see the approaching HEAD SMASH in-time, and in the anger that follows, meets the attack with a FLAME WHEELED headbutt of his own.

desperation fuels penn's actions, another barrage of RAZOR LEAVES sent to lather the enemy in more cuts.

as the battle pressed on, the difference in training, and skill, was made even more apparent. even if the original trainer wasn't here, the very fact they were so capable despite was both impressive, and terrifying.

in the absence of their presence, a wake-up call stood in their place.
[break]
[break]

when the sword gives ground, kel's toothy maw lifts in triumph. only for it to be quashed beneath the blow of his foe's AERIAL ACE. it knocks the monkey back, its arm reaching to staunch any potential bleeding. anger, fear, and anxiety fueled his next strike, a MACH PUNCH aimed to improve his ever increasing speed.

instincts take over as the titan's looming SHADOW PUNCH crosses the distance, small gouges in its tough exterior proof of the earlier razor sharp leaves. yet, it wasn't enough. not nearly enough. like his friend, desperation fills his monkey brain, and he meets the powerful punch of the golurk with a WOOD HAMMER of his own.

greyson swallows past the knot in his throat, and his eyes turn onto his hand, a single question plaguing him.
